[TW: ableism] The People You Meet When You Write About Disability Awareness

Mr. It’s Not Really An Insult

“I call people retards sometimes when they are acting super stupid. Obviously I’m not talking about people who are actually retarded. It’s just a word and if you are offended by that it’s your problem because it has nothing to do with actual retarded people. Obviously.”

Mrs. But Not My Child

“My doctor told me that my child might be born intellectually disabled, but thank god he wasn’t. So now I have a new found respect for children with disabilities. They are such troopers.”

Ms. Example

“This is a child who was born with without legs. This child will be wearing prosthetic legs for the rest of his life. But look, he smiles despite it all. Doesn’t it make you realize all the crappy things in your life are so much less important when you think about what this child has to go through?”

Mr. Tough It Out

“People with mental illnesses need to just get over it and deal with real life. Stop protecting everyone and give them a healthy dose of reality!”

Mr. Life is Rainbows and Lollipops!

“You can do it yourself! You just aren’t working hard enough! Pills are not the answer. If you just meditate and work really hard on yourself then you will become better through sheer willpower!”

Ms. Why Aren’t You A Living Pharmacy?

“Did you take your pills today? Why are you being such an asshole? Take your fucking pills. Wait, you don’t want to take pills? You need to take pills. Let me shove them down your throat.”

Mr. Jokester

(Intentionally left blank. They always realize they’ve made a huge mistake and delete their response.)

Mrs. Health Blamer

“So—you’re like this because you don’t exercise/eat healthy enough right?”

Ms. Shut Up

“We all have problems. I feel tired too sometimes. I never complain and neither should you.”

Mr. Inappropriately Helpful

“Do you need help getting to the bathroom, because I can do that for you. Do you need help eating? Here let me feed you. Let me escort you everywhere, obviously you can’t do anything on your own.”

To end on a positive note:

Ms/Mr. I Want To Learn

“I don’t really know a lot about your disability/illness, but I’d really like to learn, so I will be willing to listen if you want to talk about it or vent.”

oh, these people look familiar

Mr Tough It Out is also sometimes Mr Why Don’t You Try Being Positive

and it makes me want to

cry on them.

OMG, this contains ALL THE TRUTH. I say disablism rather than ableism, because I’m a believer in the social model of disability rather than the medical model, but that’s beside the point. The point is, ^^^THIS^^^.
